ALCINE Impacts

Cinema has changed our lives. At least for those of us who make this festival, otherwise we wouldn't be here. We are sure that cinema has changed a large part of ALCINE's audience as well. Cinema has a great capacity for impact, not only individually, but also socially. In a city like Alcalá, for more than half a century, we have been capable of awakening vocations in the short and long term, as well as of discovering new imaginaries, new ways of thinking and living.

Art in itself can affect communities, serving as a tool for communication, expression, identity and thought. It is in this double aspect that this new section is framed, which modestly aims to give shelter to those proposals that seek to make cinema accompany us far beyond the screen.

It kicks off with CROSSROADS. EL VIAJE CIRCULAR DE BOA MISTURA (WiP), the debut film by the director from Complutense, Dan Barreri, and a not very distant collective, Boa Mistura, where Madrid loses its name to merge with the Nacional-II. A circular journey around the world through the community projects of this collective of urban artists, with music by Leiva and a master class on the power of art as a tool for transformation.

CROSSROADS. EL VIAJE CIRCULAR DE BOA MISTURA (WiP)
Spain, 2022, 61 minutes

Dir: Dan Barreri. Music: Leiva. Documentary.

The outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa, is the epicenter of an inspiring journey through the work of the graffiti-rooted art collective Boa Mistura.

Along the way, urban art becomes the vehicle that connects the lives of a favela neighbor in São Paulo, a young man from the slum of Kibera in Kenya, an indigenous Mapuche woman in northern Chile, a Syrian refugee and a woman from a fishing village in the Dominican Republic. These small encounters through painting are the spark that ignites changes both in the neighbors of the communities and in the collective.

Dan Barreri, like many people from Alcalá, is educated and grows as a spectator between the seats of the Teatro-Salón Cervantes, with each edition of the festival. Over the years, he has become a reference in the world of music videos, working with artists such as Rayden and Pablo Alborán. Crossroads is his first feature-length documentary.

Boa Mistura is a group of urban artists with roots in graffiti born at the end of 2001 in Madrid. Their work is mainly developed in public spaces and is seen as a tool to transform the city and create links between people. In Alcalá, their work can be seen on the Vía Complutense mural and in the RSD Alcalá stadium in the El Val neighborhood.
