Madrid. Fantastic cinema stage.

[Until November 27. A.H. Santa María La Rica].

Madrid. Scenario of Fantastic Cinema.

[Guided tour with the curator, Víctor Matellano, on Saturday the 5th at 7:30 pm at A.H. Santa María La Rica].

Paco Rabal throws explosives at infected people on the Jet Star rollercoaster at Madrid's amusement park during the invasion of the atomic zombies, while Paul Naschy, (werewolf) fights a tiger in the castle of Chinchón in the beast and the Magic Sword. Eduardo Noriega jumps from one of the towers of Madrid's Paseo de la Castellana in Open your Eyes, while Supersonic Man, our national superhero, does the same from another building in the area.

On an international level, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, the great stars from The Fantastic films were filmed in the Madrid region. John Milius with Arnold Schwarzenegger for Conan the Barbarian, a blockbuster that celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2022. Also, we can’t forget the wizard of special effects, Ray Harryhausen, and his trilogy dedicated to Sinbad.

After the western boom, the need arose to offer new exportable genres to obtain cheap and very profitable products, opting for fantasy and horror. And so it will be for decades. Most of the filming took place in what is now the Community of Madrid, such as The Night of Walpurgis, by León Klimovsky; The Residence, by Narciso Ibáñez Serrador; Panic on the Trans-Siberian, by Eugenio Martín; and Do Not Profane the Sleep of the Dead, by Jordi Grau.

And so on to the present day, with a living genre and recent titles such as Voices, by Ángel Gómez, shot in Torrelodones, or the feature-anthology, Vampus Horror Tales, by Manuel M. Velasco, Isaac Berrocal, Piter Moreira, Erika Elizalde and Víctor Matellano, shot in Leganés, Navacerrada, Colmenar Viejo and Madrid. As well as The Grandmother, by Paco Plaza, shot in the capital.
