Films looking to stand out from the pack generally use the standard tools of role-play, script and direction. There are however other ingredients the absence of which would leave a large number of success stories in the history of cinema looking far than perfect. Music is an
essential element guaranteed to increase the impact of a film tenfold. The
Alcalá de Henares/ Comunidad de Madrid Film festival always reserves space in its programme for sounds and melodies with close links to the world of film.
The name for the soundtrack to this year’s
ALCINE38 Festival has been changed from Sónica to
Alsonic. A mosaic of
styles, vocals and rhythms set to invade the city from the 6th to the 13th of November. The limelight of Alsonic will first be taken by
Bebe, a multifaceted artist who has developed her own personality both in front of the camera and on the musical stage. She has worked on feature films such as
‘South from Granada’, ‘Moscow Gold’, ‘The Education of Fairies’ and
‘Chaotic Ana’. She was nominated for the Goya award for Most Promising Actress for her performance in ‘The Education of the Fairies’ and was awarded the Goya for Best Original Song. She had previously been nominated for another song she wrote for Miguel Bardem’s film
‘Swindled’. Bebe perfectly represents the mutually inspirational relationship that exists between music and film. Her concert will be held on
Thursday the 6th of November in the
Teatro Salón Cervantes in Alcalá de Henares, and will be the prelude to
ALCINE38, to be officially inaugurated one day later on the same stage.
Bebe’s will be the first of five scheduled concerts and top of the bill at Alsonic. The
Regional Archaeological Museum will be the venue for three of them, which will all be free.
DePedro, the new project of Jairo Zavala, will play on Saturday the 8th. The musician from La Vacazul and 3000 Hombres has now turned his attention to ‘canalla’ and mestizo sounds. DePedro takes his inspiration from singer-song writing, African music, reggae, blues and salsa. The following day, on Sunday the 9th,
Munchen will be playing, a Portuguese band that fuses rock with chamber music. The Archaeological Museum will say farewell to Alsonic on Tuesday the 11th with the performance of
Francisco López, a renowned personality from the underground scene committed to musical purism far removed from the excesses of virtuosos.
Alsonic will be brought to a close by the Brazilian sounds of
Vossanau. This quartet blends smooth intensity and ‘Tropicalismo’ to create an attractive patchwork to be heard in the San José de Caracciolos Hall on Thursday the 13th of November. Entry is free by invitation. A fascinating denouement to bring the curtain down on the
soundtrack to the Festival.
